The Posture Bar

The posture bar is a piece of equipment that resembles a golf club. It has been developed as an alternative to using heavy dumbbell weights for strength and conditioning and is used for functional exercises, specific to golf. It is very affective and simple to use and the exercises can be done virtually anywhere and is used by a number of tour players around the world.

Exercises have been developed to build up the “feels” for the golf swing and to “fire” the correct golf muscles through the chain of the body, sequentially. The posture bar allows the user to retain strength and posture in the important golfing muscles. It also helps combat the flexed posture of golf and stretches tight muscles at the front of the body caused by fixed prolonged functional activities, such as computer work or driving.

Most of the drills require the golfer to be standing in order to simulate the golf swing. Many also require the posture bar to be attached to a wall or other suitable fixed point (the tubing can be attached to a hook that is connected to the wall or it can be fitted firmly onto the top of a door).

The benefit of the posture bar is that it allows the user to build strength through resistance in the tubing. This also has the added benefit of making the drill as hard or as easy as you like. By loosening the tubing and therefore the resistance, you can enhance your “feels” for the short game. Alternatively you can tie more resistance into the tubing to strengthen the more explosive muscles used in the long game.

After using each posture bar drill it is recommended that you simulate a golf swing using a club or the posture bar itself. Using mirrors throughout the session reinforces good swing patterns.

Important: Before you do these exercises, talk them through with your trainer or physiotherapist. If you have any existing injuries it is strongly recommended that you do these exercises under supervision. If you experience sharp pain or soreness, stop immediately.
